Gary Announces Retirement

After 24 years of exceptional service to the Town of Carefree, Town Administrator Gary Neiss has announced his retirement, effective in early March 2026. Gary’s tenure has been defined by integrity, vision, and an unwavering commitment to the community he has helped shape for nearly a quarter of a century.

Gary first joined the Town in 2002 as the Planning & Zoning Administrator, where he spent seven years guiding thoughtful development and long-term planning efforts. In 2009, he was appointed Town Administrator, a role he has held with distinction for 17 years.

Speaking to the legacy Gary leaves behind, Mayor John Crane notes, “The most fitting tribute of Gary Neiss is the Carefree we have today – a municipality that financially has never been stronger, robust and well-maintained infrastructure throughout the Town, and the talented and impressive Town Staff he has brought together to keep our Town humming. All are a testament to Gary’s vision and devotion to Carefree.”

Under Gary’s stewardship, Carefree has experienced unprecedented financial stability and growth, with capital reserves reaching record highs. Through strategic planning and prudent management, he has overseen the reinvestment of these funds into vital infrastructure improvements — including extensive roadway resurfacing, drainage and water upgrades, fire and emergency service enhancements, and public safety investments — all while maintaining the Town’s long-standing tradition of conservative fiscal management.

Gary’s oversight has also led to the renewal of Carefree’s roadways and infrastructure, replacing miles of aging pavement and enhancing safety for residents, businesses, and visitors. These visible improvements reflect his dedication to building a resilient community that remains well-prepared for the future.

Beyond his operational achievements, Gary has prioritized trust, transparency, and teamwork. Over his two decades of service, he has built a cohesive, high-performing team that reflects his values of professionalism, integrity, and service. Known as a mentor and dependable leader, Gary is highly admired by his employees and colleagues. He often describes Town staff as a ‘family,’ a sentiment that is fully shared by those who have worked alongside him and feel the same strong sense of connection and camaraderie.

As he prepares for retirement, Gary reflects with pride on the team he has built, the partnerships he has fostered, and the community he has served with heart and purpose. The coming new year holds special significance for him personally — he will celebrate his 60th birthday, his 30th wedding anniversary, and his mother’s 90th birthday — marking a fitting time to begin a new chapter.

Leaving Carefree and the exceptional team he helped build was not an easy decision for Neiss. However, he departs with great confidence in the strong foundation established during his tenure — one built on stability, trust, and a shared commitment to preserving what makes Carefree such a special place.

Mayor John Crane and the Town Council will soon begin the process of selecting the next Town Administrator, ensuring a smooth transition that continues Gary’s legacy of responsible leadership and community-centered service.

For more than two decades, Gary Neiss has exemplified what it means to lead with dedication, heart, and vision. His steady guidance has helped shape the Carefree we know today — a thriving, resilient, and beautiful community that stands as a reflection of his lifelong commitment to public service. With heartfelt gratitude, Mayor John Crane remarks, “While we will miss Gary, we will treasure the fruits of his 24 years of exceptional service. Join me in wishing Gary a full and happy retirement.”
