The Maricopa County Environmental Services Department will conduct Stakeholder Workshops to introduce, discuss, and obtain input regarding the closure of its six regional transfer stations including the transfer station at 3955 East Carefree Highway, Cave Creek.
Some Carefree residents use this transfer station to dispose of debris and vegetation cleanup. Closure of this transfer station will result in longer disposal trips and additional costs. Inconvenient disposal will disincentivize vegetation cleanup at a time when residents are encouraged to make properties Firewise in the advent of a desert wildfire. This could also lead to individuals illegally disposing of debris in desert washes and cul-de-sacs ultimately leading to stormwater pollution and other potential issues when heavy rainfall occurs.
The County provided the following overview and additional information:
“The Department operates six regional transfer stations, which were originally established to serve areas without access to solid waste disposal services. However, private, and municipal service providers have since expanded their capacity and coverage, now meeting the community’s needs. Additionally, operational costs at the transfer stations have risen sharply due to higher transport and disposal expenses. This has led to a persistent revenue deficit, now covered by taxpayers’ dollars from the County’s general fund. To eliminate redundant services and support the County’s commitment to responsible financial management, the Department is proceeding with closure of its six transfer stations."
The Cave Creek transfer station is the most used of the six stations. You are encouraged to make your voice heard. Let the County know that you want them to find a solution that results in the continued operation of this transfer station.
The Maricopa County Environmental Services Department is holding a public workshop regarding the proposed closure of the County’s six regional transfer stations.
