Kay Fire in Carefree

Firewise USA LogoThe recent Kay Fire northeast of Carefree, which began Monday afternoon and burned approximately 42 acres, was reported 100% contained by Tuesday afternoon. Thanks to the quick response of volunteer firefighters, Tonto National Forest fire crews, and support from aerial resources, including three helicopters, one slurry tanker and one Single Engine Air Tanker, suppression efforts were successful.

This close-to-home fire is an important reminder of the role we all play in protecting our community. During this time of year, fire danger remains high and fire restrictions are in place. Staying vigilant and practicing Firewise principles can help protect not only your home, but also your neighbors, first responders and the beautiful desert and forested areas that surround Carefree.

Firewise practices include simple but important steps such as clearing dead vegetation, trimming trees and shrubs, maintaining defensible space around your home, removing debris from roofs and gutters, and being mindful of anything that could spark a fire. Small actions can make a meaningful difference when it comes to wildfire prevention and community safety.

The Carefree Fire Department is an active resource for residents and neighborhoods interested in becoming more fire-aware and fire-prepared. The department hosts Firewise meetings and classes, provides educational resources, and can assist communities interested in becoming an officially recognized Firewise USA® site. Three communities gained this achievement last year, you can read more HERE.

Residents are encouraged to connect with the Carefree Fire Department at the weekly Friday Farmers Market, attend upcoming Firewise classes and meetings, email the department, or call the station with questions. Wildfire prevention is a shared responsibility, and together we can help keep Carefree safe, prepared and resilient.
