Mayor, Town Engineer and Public Works Supervisor posing with storm drain painting

Close up of storm drain paintingIt started with a simple question from Carefree’s Town Engineer: how can we make stormwater pollution awareness more visible in the community?

In a desert town like Carefree, it’s easy to overlook the impact of everyday water use. With monsoon season officially underway, raising awareness about stormwater pollution becomes even more important. Rainwater, pool drainage, and runoff from garden hoses all flow somewhere—and can carry pollutants into our washes and ecosystem. The Town Engineer’s question sparked a creative collaboration with the Town’s Communications Manager, who developed two design concepts inspired by local wildlife: one featuring a Gila monster and the other a javelina.

Rather than deciding behind the scenes, the Town invited the community to take part. Residents cast their votes in the November 2025 edition of Carefree Connection, with the Gila monster design emerging as the clear favorite.

That design has now come to life with Carefree’s first painted storm drain, located in the Carefree Desert Gardens along Ho Hum Road. Completed during the Town’s annual Earth Day Celebration in April, the artwork is simple, eye-catching, and meaningful. Featuring the message “Do Not Dump, Drains to Wash,” it serves as a reminder that anything entering our storm drains or flowing off our roads ultimately goes into local washes.

Mayor John Crane states, “Carefree is proud to lead by example in protecting our desert environment. With our new “Drains to Wash” signage, we’re reminding everyone that stormwater flows directly into our washes—impacting the wildlife and natural spaces we value so much. Our goal is simple: protect our washes, reduce pollution, and preserve this landscape for future generations.”

Inspired by coastal “Do Not Dump, Drains to Ocean” programs, Carefree’s message reflects the unique importance of our desert environment: our washes matter. These natural waterways play a vital role in directing stormwater, supporting groundwater recharge, and sustaining native plants and wildlife. Everyday actions—like washing your car, watering gardens, or draining a pool—can allow pollutants to enter our delicate ecosystem, especially during monsoon season, if not done responsibly.

That’s why this initiative is so important. It encourages everyone to think twice before allowing chemicals, debris, or dirty water to enter storm drains or flow off our streets, helping protect our washes and the broader desert environment.

Painted with the help of Carefree’s Public Works Supervisor and Mayor John Crane, this project marks the beginning of a broader effort to increase stormwater awareness across Carefree. Through simple yet impactful touches like this, the Town hopes to inspire residents and visitors alike to help protect the desert by keeping pollutants out of storm drains and washes.
