❤️ On September 11, 2026, 25 years after the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001, our community came together to remember and honor the lives lost on that fateful day.
World Trade Center survivor Bob Jenkins shared his powerful firsthand story of that morning — from arriving at the World Trade Center and beginning a meeting on the 39th floor in the North Tower, to feeling the explosion and how the building began to sway, escaping alongside others in a crowded stairwell and witnessing the unimaginable events unfolding around him.
The evening was filled with remembrance, reflection and community. We were honored to welcome a large group of Arizona Rangers, Rural Metro firefighters from the Carefree Fire Department and more than 75 residents and community members. 🧑🚒⭐

What began as an uncertain new chapter quickly became a meaningful and joyful experience.
Linda says the shop is “always an adventure” because you truly never know what you might find. Many customers discover pieces that bring back memories of childhood, family, or something they once loved and thought was lost. From nostalgic keepsakes to rare collectibles, Bilinda’s has a way of turning a simple shopping trip into an emotional and memorable experience. Linda sources many of her antiques from Pennsylvania, along with online auctions, carefully bringing unique treasures back to Carefree for others to enjoy.

Often mistaken for wild pigs, javelinas are actually collared peccaries, a unique mammal native to the Americas. Their name comes from the light-colored “collar” of hair around their shoulders. 🐗✨
Javelinas are true desert foodies—prickly pear pads and fruit are their favorites, and you might catch them with bright red, juice-stained faces after a feast! 🌵
Traveling in tight-knit groups called squadrons, javelinas look out for each other, especially their adorable babies—known as “reds”—who sport a rusty-tan coat for perfect desert camouflage. If you’re lucky enough to spot a squadron crossing the road, remember to give them plenty of space. 👀

The intimate and inspiring ceremony featured wonderful speeches from Cynthia Kiefer and Mayor John Crane, reminding us of the ideals of liberty and the foundation of our country. As Carefree celebrates America 250, this meaningful addition to the Carefree Desert Gardens will serve as a lasting symbol of history, community, and freedom. ✨
Visitors can now enjoy patriotic quote signs from famous American figures in Carefree Desert Gardens from Ho Hum Road to the Carefree Liberty Tree located near Wampum Way. We invite you to take a walk and experience them for yourself! 🚶♀️🌵

Yesterday morning, the Carefree community gathered in beautiful remembrance. 🪖
Under the desert sky, we came together for our annual Memorial Day tribute — a peaceful and moving program honoring the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.🌵
The morning was filled with reflection, gratitude, and patriotism. Molly Zehnder of the Daughters of the American Revolution shared the powerful story of a recent Honor Flight honoring 32 female Vietnam War-era veterans from Arizona, reminding us of the many ways service and sacrifice continue to be recognized. 🤝
Beautiful musical performances by Olivia Nicosia and Adam Compeau added to the meaningful atmosphere, while Captain Eric Spencer delivered a heartfelt speech honoring his fallen comrades and reflecting on the courage, sacrifice, and brotherhood carried by those who serve. ✈️
We are also grateful to Cave Creek Boy Scout Troop 603 for presenting and retrieving the colors, and to Imprints of Honor for helping make the program so special. A special thank you to Carefree Coffee Roastery for providing coffee for the morning and to DAR Black Mountain Chapter for serving attendees with a smile. 🍵

For #WildlifeWednesday, we’re spotlighting this prehistoric-looking desert resident, often nicknamed the “Dragon That Lives On Black Mountain” by locals. These large, harmless lizards are commonly found basking on sunny rocky slopes, using the desert heat to power their day. ☀️🌵

While their rugged scales and bold coloring may make them look fierce, chuckwallas are actually gentle herbivores that spend their time feeding on desert plants and flowers. 🌺

When threatened, they use one of the desert’s most impressive defense mechanisms: wedging themselves into rock crevices and inflating their bodies like a balloon, making it nearly impossible for predators to pull them free. 🪨 They even “sneeze” excess salt from their noses after eating salty desert plants. 🤧

Keep your eyes open while hiking—you might just spot this desert dragon soaking up the sun nearby. And as always, please give chuckwallas and all desert wildlife plenty of space to help keep them safe and wild. 👀🏔️

Carefree was honored to kick off the Marine Corps–Law Enforcement Foundation’s Gathering of Heroes with a special welcome in the Carefree Desert Gardens at the Veterans Memorial! ✨
It was an unforgettable gathering that brought our community together to celebrate true American heroes. We were privileged to welcome Medal of Honor recipients 🎖️ COL. Harvey Curtiss Barnum Jr., CSM Robert Martin Patterson, 1st LT. Brian Miles Thacker, and MAJ James Allen Taylor.
The evening also featured a beautiful performance of the National Anthem and American the Beautiful by local student Ava Cohen 🎶, along with words from Mayor John Crane and COL. Harvey Curtiss Barnum Jr. that served as a powerful reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and unity that define our nation. 🪖
Prior to the event, Rusty Crossland welcomed the group of distinguished veterans—including the Medal of Honor recipients, World War II veteran Sgt Major John Taylor, Sgt Bob Jenkins —to explore his RH Crossland Foundation Historical Sports and History Museum near Spanish Village at 37555 North Hum Road. 🖼️

Created by artist Bryce Pettit, this stunning piece inspires both children and adults to embrace learning. It also serves as a heartfelt tribute to the Burns Family—and especially the late Liz Burns—for their ongoing commitment to the community through their generosity and support. 👨🎨
